Changes to Premises Registration and the Consignment Note Number format

Until 01 April 2016, nothing changes where 500kg or more hazardous waste is produced, collected or removed, the premises will still be required to be registered with the Environment Agency.

From 01 April 2016, you will no longer be required to register the premises with the Environment Agency for waste produced in England.

As a hazardous waste producer who may have registered a site with the Environment Agency, we are writing to update you of the changes to hazardous waste regulations which will affect your business.

There are 2 aspects of the hazardous waste regulations which are changing on 1 April 2016, which you may need to prepare for;

  • Producers of hazardous waste in England will no longer need to notify their premises with the Environment Agency.
  • The format of the unique consignment note code, which appears on every consignment note, will change.

From 01 April 2016, if waste is produced in England, the first six characters of the consignment note code (currently the premises registration number) must be replaced by the first six letters or numbers (not symbols) of the business name. It is the responsibility of the Producer to ensure consistent use of the organisation name in this regard.

‘EXEMPT’ will no longer be used.

The second set of characters will continue to be five numbers or letters of the waste producer/holder’s chosing.
